The UK played a significant part in Uruguay's history in the period immediately before and after independence (1830), being heavily involved in the railways, public utilities, banking, insurance, food and the agricultural sector.  

The United Kingdom was for many years Uruguay's main commercial partner. This connection continues to give the UK an important place in the affections of the Uruguayans today.

The UK and Uruguay enjoy excellent bilateral relations and have much in common on a range of international issues.
