Defence relations

The relationship between the British and the Uruguayan armed forces is strong and based on mutual understanding.  In recent years the UK has operated a varied programme of military training with Uruguay, sending students to British organised. In recent years the UK has operated a varied programme of military training, visits and projects with Uruguay. These have included the Joint Command and Staff Course (Defence Academy), the Managing Defence in a Democracy Course (Defence School of Management and Technology), the International Peace Support Operations Programme (Land Warfare Centre), the Military Observers Course and the Exclusive Economic Course.

Uruguayan Chiefs of Staff are regular visitors to the UK.  In April 2009, the Director of Operational Policy in the Ministry of Defence Peter Watkins visited Uruguay, when he presented the Uruguayan Peacekeeping School with English books.  In March 2009 the UK Chief of Air Staff Sir Glenn Torpy paid an official visit to Uruguay. In December 2008 Mr Phil Jones (Deputy Director, Directorate for Policy and Defence Relations [South], in the UK MOD) visited Uruguay. In December 2007, the Deputy Commander in Chief of the Fleet visited Uruguay for the Centennial celebrations of the Uruguayan Naval Academy.

The UK Defence Attaché Colonel Allan Thomson resides in Buenos Aires and is accredited to the Government of Uruguay.  He visits Uruguay frequently.
